Thoughts On VE Day

Peace in Europe

Today is the 75th anniversary of VE Day – Victory in Europe in the Second World War was achieved with the ultimate sacrifice by many. I am grateful to my forefathers and the Golden Generation’ for their sacrifice.

But, here is my gripe – fifty, sixty, seventy-five years later and we are electing far-right and Fascist governments in our own countries, the countries of the Allies.

Take Brasil, USA and, to an extent, my own country, the UK. We have elected governments that share the same portion of the political spectrum as 1930’s Germany.

We have leant nothing.

I will be spending the day thankful for the 75 years of peace in Western Europe. I am grateful for that – I have benefitted immensly from a peaceful Europe that VE Day has brought about. But, I am hesitant to see what the future holds.
